Characteristics of meat, pet, and research rabbit farms in Brazil: An overview based on twelve farms

<p>Rabbit production has great growth potential in a country where animal is very important. However, there little data about this industry Southern and Southeast Brazil. The aim of study was to describe Brazilian rabbit farms that provide meat, pets animals for learning or research. Three pet farms, four meat five research were visited, the farm characteristics collected between June 2018 March 2019. A total 1170 rabbits 617 cages evaluated. Most had 21 60 (58.3%) does. Considering all farmers reported an average rate conception 71.8%, prolificacy 6.7 kits per parturition, interval parturitions 65 d 6.3 parturitions/doe yr. mean mortality breeding 10.4%, compared 1.7% growing (rabbits post-weaning until slaughter sale). area cage 0.43±0.1 m², with stocking density 3 rabbits/m². most common system used by flat-deck (66.7% farms) wire (91.7%). Metal (41.7%) clay (33.3%) feeders types feeders, automatic nipple drinkers present 75% farms. Dirt accumulation observed 11.2% 5.7% drinkers, but not feeders. 4.1% considered unsafe, 0.8% problems drinkers. studied ranged from small medium size, extensive reproductive rhythm followed basic techniques. Animal health management aspects need be reviewed farmer if conditions are improve.</p>
